The Most Iconic '80s Hairstyles & Our Damage-Free Tips To Get Them Yourself

A low-maintenance cut means you have time to dedicate to your hair health. This leave-in serum looks after your scalp to promote thicker, healthier strands. Apply to wet or dry hair to soften and enhance curls and boost moisture.

Layered Bob

Regular cuts are also a great way to maintain hair health, since you'll be getting ahead on removing dead, split ends, but don't neglect your haircare altogether. You can swap frequent conditioning for once-a-week treatments to keep the hair from looking flat and greasy, but keep up those weekly treatments so the hair doesn't become dry. The '80s were a time of dramatic self-expression with a strong youth culture that embraced rebellion against traditional norms and the more natural hippie look of the late '60s and '70s. This was an age where the artificial was embraced, and crimped locks, in particular, were a way for the younger generation to break free from more conservative hairstyles and express creativity.

Don’t assume you need to actually get a perm to achieve this look. Use a small barrel curling iron for all-over corkscrew curls, or use heatless hair curlers sized for corkscrew or spiral curls. If you happen to have naturally curly hair — your time has come.

So, if you would prefer to skip curling your hair over and over, a hair perm may be your saving grace. Take a peek back at an ‘80s yearbook, and you’re bound to see tons of people rocking this look. Today, they are being incorporated again by both women and men. The style started to come back because Millenials have a fondness for the edgy look. Modern mullets can be created with a variety of hair lengths and colors. The bob haircut became popular in the ’80s, and it remains a common haircut request at salons all around the world.

"Today’s products aren’t as damaging as the alcohol-based products in the '80s," adds Howard McLaren, a hairstylist and co-founder of R+Co hair care. "Pin curls! When you curl hair for this iconic style, I would say pull the barrel iron out, use some strong hold hair spray and pin curl clips," she says. "As you curl you roll that curl into place and allow it to shape your face, roll the curl in the opposite direction away from the face." Asymmetrical styles are a staple of the '80s, and we've slowly seen them start to trickle back onto mainstream runways. Ask your stylist for an asymmetrical cut, or create the illusion by flipping your hair over at a deep part, which can also help to achieve volume for thinner hair. Ahead, check out these classic ‘80s hairstyles that are back and better than ever.

Sadly, this hairstyle comes at a risk, as exposing hair to any heat styling tool exposes you to the cruel consequences of broken, frizzy, and dead hair. To reduce damage, start by preparing your hair for heat styling with a moisturizing conditioner to maintain hydration. Next, protect your hair with a heat-protectant spray to prevent damage and create a barrier between your hair and the heat.

It's particularly great for looser curls or waves as it will help to add some real definition and shape to your natural texture. It is the effect of the hairspray that you use on the curls to make them stay for longer periods. On the periphery, you have to add twisted braids to add that exotic Native American hair braids. To complete this 80s women’s hairstyle, you need to do a small pony at the center of your head. Are you sporting a short hairstyle with curtain bangs right now?

Rocker Hairstyle

Last, flip hair over and slide in the bandana, securing the ends at the top of your head. The texture revolution sure is taking off, but let’s take a look back at the celebrities and styles that inspired the very beginnings of this grass roots movement. Sure, the middle part might be alive and well in 2021, but there's nothing wrong with testing out an '80s side part—especially when it looks as cool and sleek as this one. Flip your hair to the side and spritz a texturizing spray through your mid-lengths and ends for some added volume.

In case you haven't noticed, chunky and padded headbands have made a major comeback recently, and they help provide a preppy and effortless look. While hair parts were often hidden by teased styles and high ponytails, when they were visible, a middle part was incredibly popular. Middle parts were seen throughout the ‘70s, and the trend carried over well into the ’80s with women parting their mane down the middle when wearing long, voluminous strands.

We used a liquid styling glaze for light control (Dep, The Hair Manager), then combed her hair back and up on each side, securing it with bobby pins. So let’s return to the days of synth-pop and Rubik’s cubes, to a time when hairstyles were an adventure and each hairdo was a testament to the wearer’s audacious spirit. The definition of edgy, this hairstyle boasts shaved sides and has length at the top for a unique, centered look.

To create the perfect crimps and waves, you can use a three-barrel iron or sleep with your hair in braids and then unravel them in the morning. Pixie cuts popularized in the 80s are still in demand for those times when you want a cool, contemporary hairstyle. Modern pixie cuts can be created on all hair types and textures, and they are incredibly easy to manage.

Tease one section at a time, as this will ensure a balanced volume distribution. Remember to use a gentle touch when teasing your hair and avoid aggressive backcombing. To emulate an '80s look, it's best to tease hair that's already curly or wavy, but this can work on straight hair, too.

The 20 Best 80s Hairstyles to Try

curly 80's hair

"It's easy to get big, fluffy curls by using hot rollers or a thermal brush like the Amika Blowout Babe ($100) on already dried hair," she says. "Brush it through the hair and hold the curls briefly. When you finish the whole head, flip it upside down and brush through the curls with a paddle brush." Lily’s short, sleek cut is a modern take on the sophisticated bobs of the ‘80s. Celebrity stylist Justin Toves-Vincilione, advocate of Authentic Beauty Concept, says her layers live mainly around her face and are sculpted into a long curtain effect. "You'll want to ask for longer curtain bangs that go from short to long right at the top of your cheekbones."

Low-to-High Beautiful Bobs

This hairstyle was also a big hit for the men who also wore it. That is the message that comes with this classic hairstyle. For multiple highlights like these, you need to have volumes of hair. This will enable you to layer your hair well with different color textures.

When that time comes, you will make the right consideration. It’s easy to add some wave — and color pizzazz — to straight hair like Cynthia’s. To start, we wet Cynthia’s hair and combed a styling gel through it (we tried Clinique Crystal Clear Gel). Using a small brush, we crimped her hair into soft waves and blew it dry. With bold looks in mind, it’s only right we mention the infamous mullet.

Jodi’s 80s hairstyle before & after

Toves-Vincilione shares that modern feathered layered looks are still popular but more wearable due to updated styling tools and more hair-friendly styling products. You don’t need to chop your hair into super short layers, but make sure they are at a length you’re comfortable with. After blow drying the hair, use volumizing mousse to prep the hair and then a small round brush to curl each section. For highly textured hair, pre-stretch the hair first and then go in to complete the blowout curls.

Asymmetrical Cut

Since it is easy to maintain, you can wear this style daily without hesitation. Just like its name, this is the hairstyle for the wild at heart. Its blend of screaming colors allows you to make your wild side known. To be complete, you need accessories of wired colors to match.

Her shaggy haircut is an ’80s version of the wolf cut (a grown-out mullet). Best known as the original Daisy Duke on the television show The Dukes of Hazzard, Catherine Bach flaunted these '70s barrel curls both off and on the silver screen. The high pony trend has never died, but it probably continued thanks to Olivia Newton-John.

Modern Bowl Cut

Hair accessories, like headbands, can completely transform a look. They are a great choice when you want to elevate a casual, simple hairstyle. They also do wonders when you want to add a little embellishment for that special touch. Headbands were also popularized on the show “Gossip Girl,” as they represented a crown that the main character Blair Waldorf would often put on.

Invented in the 1960s, Kellogg’s Pop Tarts toaster pastries are more popular than ever

We’re huge fans of crimping when it comes to women’s 80s hairstyles! For long layered hair, crimp small sections of the hair and finish the style off by pinning back a section of hair near your face in a swooped angle. If your hair is past your shoulders, it’s the perfect length for a chic, feminine 80s hairstyle, like a low side braid! The key to the vintage feel is creating a little bit of volume with teasing near the hairline.

Hairstyles We Covet: The Hottest Cuts and Latest Trends for 2023

But this 80s short haircut has a catch when you come closer. If you like to experiment and still be classy, this should be your pick. We mentioned that this decade put emphasis on volume, but height was important too when it came to hairstyles. Ponytails were placed high up on the head for a lifted look, and side ponytails were no exception.

The possibilities are endless with a pixie cut, as you can rock it with bangs, waves, faux hawks – or switch it up with an underut pixie. Popular hairstyles of the 1980s included permed curls, crimped styles, soft cuts, feathered waves (think Farrah Fawcett), and most importantly, teased roots. In the 1970s, pin-straight strands parted perfectly down the middle was the “it” way to wear your hair, but once the year 1980 came around, attitudes towards hair changed.

Perfect for round face shapes, this look highlights your features and gives your face a slimmer look. Today, it’s usually created as an asymmetrical bob, and it’s just as flattering and chic. The tapered Afro was a favored, natural hair style in the ‘80s. A variation of the '70s afro style, this look shapes your natural texture with pinned sides and a tapered cut for a more structured look.

The half-up ponytail allows you to show off your length while getting hair out of your face. And like many other styles during that time, it was paired with an ultra-high ponytail and a colorful scrunchie. One of the most notable haircuts of the ‘80s, the shag cut, features choppy ends and layers for a style that offers tons of body and movement.

If you don't have natural curls, wrap pieces of hair around a large-barrel curling iron and, once cool, comb through them. But if your hair doesn’t hold a curl well (or at all), a modern all-over perm can create plush curls, too. Whether worn long and feathered or short and choppy, many elements of an '80s haircut are re-emerging. Wartime victory rolls were a popular hairstyle to play with during the '80s. To create them, part your hair to the side and section off the hair in the front. Back comb that front section of hair and roll it inward by looping it around your thumb.

Mohawks and side-shaven undercuts were an underground staple, particularly with the punk movement. Pairing these edgy looks with alternative hair colors, such as bright blues and greens, was also the norm. These days, this 80s hairstyle has resurfaced in all its subversive glory, with a gamut of patterns and colors to boot. Make your ’80s style a bit more modern by mixing it with an ombré color story to your curls as opposed to fully dying your hair. Ombre is a bit easier to maintain if you don’t want to worry about consistently touching up dark roots. Gleaming, middle-parted waves molded to perfection were the hallmarks of the decade’s pretty girls.

HOUSE MADE OF DAWN: N Scott Momaday: Amazon.com: Books

house made of dawn

Part III is told from the point of view of Ben Benally, a relocated Navajo who befriends Abel in Los Angeles. Roommates in Los Angeles, Ben and Abel share many things in their backgrounds. On his one visit to Walatowa, Benally finds the landscape there similar to that in which he grew up. Like Abel he was raised in that landscape without parents by his grandfather. Benally even suggests that he is somehow related to Abel since the Navajos have a clan called Jemez, the name of Abel's pueblo. The etiological legend of Santiago (St. James) and the rooster is told by Fr.

John Big Bluff Tosamah

house made of dawn

The action of House Made of Dawn takes place between July 20, 1945, and February 28, 1952. The narration comprises an undated prologue and four dated sections set in the pueblo of Walatowa (Jemez), New Mexico (prologue and sections 1 and 4) and the Los Angeles area (sections 2 and 3). Created by the original team behind SparkNotes, LitCharts are the world's best literature guides.

Father Olguin

The two white women, Angela and Milly, treat Abel well and respect his heritage. Because of his unique position, Father Olguin functions as an intermediary between the outside culture and the people of the reservation. When Angela St. John arrives at Walatowa, she asks Father Olguin to help her hire an Indian worker.

Literary Devices used in House Made of Dawn

However, Abel befriends a man named Ben Benally from a reservation in New Mexico and develops an intimate relationship with Milly, a kind, blonde social worker. However, his overall situation has not improved and Abel ends up drunk on the beach with his hands, head, and upper body beaten and broken. Memories run through his mind of the reservation, the war, jail, and Milly. Abel eventually finds the strength to pick himself up and he stumbles across town to the apartment he shares with Ben. By his mere presence Abel threatens the protective illusions so necessary to Martinez' emotional and psychological survival, and he poses the same threat to Tosamah and Benally. Their suffering is at least as productive of guilt as of rage and therefore they have devised what Trimble calls "strategies" to avoid acknowledging that suffering to themselves.

Meanwhile, Abel’s traumatic experiences in the war have severed any connection he once felt to his ancestors’ spirituality. Angela promises Abel that she’ll help him leave Walatowa and find work elsewhere. Their affair helps Abel realize that his return to Walatowa hasn’t gone well. While participating in a traditional ceremony, he’s embarrassed by a local man named Juan Reyes. To the locals, Reyes is an Indigenous American man and an albino known as the “white man.” Abel decides that Reyes is a witch and stabs him after drinking heavily in a bar. The police arrest Abel and send him to jail—and he’s found guilty of murder.

He is greeted by his grandfather Francisco, his only remaining relative. Coming home sends the addled, lonely Abel into a spiral of memories about his childhood in Walatowa as he struggles to reconnect with his homeland and community. These memories include the deaths of Abel’s mother and brother when he was a child. Part II takes place in Los Angeles, California six and a half years later. Abel has been released from prison and unites with a local group of Indians. The leader of the group, Reverend John Big Bluff Tosamah, Priest of the Sun, teases Abel as a "longhair" who is unable to assimilate to the demands of the modern world.

The White Man

He takes a temporary job cutting wood for Angela St. John, a troubled, sensuous woman who is visiting the area to undertake mineral bath treatments for some sort of chronic fatigue; she is pregnant. He also participates in a village festival and is singled out by a strange, ominous-appearing albino man. Meanwhile, the omniscient narration follows a parallel line with the village priest, Father Olguin, as he studies the diary of his predecessor, Fray Nicolás, and makes an awkward approach to Angela. A rare book-length consideration of the novel that touches upon all of the varied theories, offering an excellent overview of critical opinion. Both the parole officer and the Relocation people attempt to keep Abel out of trouble, but his problems only deepen.

House Made of Dawn blends fictional and nonfictional elements to depict life on an Indigenous American reservation like the one where Momaday grew up. Not until years later, when she visits Abel in the hospital and, in effect, releases him, does the evil finally begin to ebb. As she speaks of her son, Peter, and the Indian tales he loves to hear, Ben remembers the stories told by his grandfather who spoke from the legends of his heritage.

The bus leaned and creaked; he felt the surge of motion and the violent shudder of the whole machine on the gravel road. Then suddenly he was overcome with a desperate loneliness, and he wanted to cry out. He looked toward the fields, but a low rise of the land lay before them. Auditory symbols follow Abel directly from his affair with Angela to the climactic scene of Part I, the killing of the albino. She would know the arrangement of her days and hours in the upstairs and down, and they would be for her the proof of her being and having been. The others were singing, too, but it was the wrong kind of thing, and I wanted to pray.

This is one reason why he tries to shepherd Abel as he does at the factory and why he takes him into his home. That Ben truly believes he is acting in Abel's best interest is undeniable, and in a very real sense he is. Abel sorely needs the kind of support Ben provides, and if Tosamah's attempt to isolate Abel is a denial of his own Indianness, Ben's generous inclusion of Abel in his own life is a wonderfully rich expression of his. But Ben's concern for Abel is motivated by fear as well as by compassion. Tosamah feared that Abel "was going to get us all in trouble," and so does Ben. Abel's problems, in Ben's view, go beyond those which confront every relocated Indian, severe as these problems may be.

Abel, too drunk to seriously threaten Tosamah, lunges impotently toward him, and the others, to relieve their own discomfort, laugh at his futility. Tosamah, who "doesn't come from the reservation" himself, has made the others ashamed of what they are, and when they try to dispel their shame by projecting it onto Abel, Abel's rage loses its foundation and he feels empty and alone. As with many other minority groups in America, Native American populations became more connected with the mainstream culture as a result of World War II. Prejudice and discriminatory policies did not disappear overnight, but the fact that people from ethnic subcultures were thrown together in barracks in the war led to some softening social boundaries.

He needs to feel with the Tewa singer quoted earlier his authority return to him. But here out of harmony with himself and his community he needs most of all the kind of re-emergence journey offered in a Navajo chantway. The pattern of the emergence narrative—a journey toward order symbolized by a cultural landscape—is repeated in Navajo chantway rituals.

Interspersed with his sermon are Abel’s confused recollections of his murder trial, his prison sentence, and his sexual relationship with his social worker Milly. A young Native American, Abel has come home to New Mexico from war to find himself caught between two worlds. The first is the world of his grandfather’s, wedding him to the rhythm of the seasons, the harsh beauty of the land, and the ancient rites and traditions of his people. But the other world — modern, industrial America — pulls at Abel, demanding his loyalty, claiming his soul, and goading him into a destructive, compulsive cycle of depravity and despair. Their coming together is an epiphany for each of them; she draws from him a kind of vision she has never experienced before, a "knowingness" of who she is, and of her relationship to other living things and to life itself. But the evil spirit which has hitherto clouded her days now descends upon him.

House Made of Dawn Study Guide Literature Guide

house made of dawn

He is an active member of the Gourd Dance Society, where he has succeeded his grandfather, Mammedaty. Momaday was born on the Kiowa Reservation in Lawton, Oklahoma, on February 27, 1934. His father, Alfred Morris, was an artist and teacher; in fact, his artworks are used to illustrate several of Momaday's books, including his history of the Kiowa people, The Way to Rainy Mountain. His mother, Mayme Natachee Scott, taught and wrote children's books.

Abel feels alienated and struggles to reconnect with his community and its ancient traditions. This chapter also contains a depiction of a peyote ceremony and introduces Ben Benally, who will play a significant part in Abel's eventual healing. In Los Angeles, however, Benally's sense of place is lost in his idealism and naïveté.

Point of View

house made of dawn

[Many] white heroes fail or are unconvincing because their relationship to the land has been more fantasy than history and because they are conquerors and violators. Their vision must then remain either an anomaly or forlorn and tragic. Abel's grandfather, a farmer and holy man who lives by the organic calendar [is] … able to sustain the shock of civilization and technology and preserve and transmit the land vision that [he has] never violated as [an individual] or as a people.

House Made of Dawn: Characters

He thinks about his experiences of the war, his time in prison, and his relationship with Milly. When he finally picks himself up off the beach, he stumbles back to the small apartment that he and Ben share. As Martinez batters Abel's body, so Tosamah batters his spirit, and Momaday, through his use of narrative structure, stresses the parallel between them. The novel's second chapter, "The Priest of the Sun," in effect begins and ends with a sermon by Tosamah.

He raised Abel after the death of Abel's mother and older brother, Vidal. Francisco instilled in Abel a sense of native traditions and values, but the war and other events severed Abel's connections to that world of spiritual and physical wholeness and connectedness to the land and its people, a world known as a "house made of dawn". The relation to place taught him by Francisco is broken by each, as are his hands. In the Navajo emergence narrative, for example, First Man and First Woman accompanied by Coyote and other actors from the animal world journey upward through four underworlds into the present Fifth World.

When he returns to his job, the boss harasses him and Abel quits. A downward spiral begins and Abel continues to get drunk every day, borrow money from Ben and Milly, and laze around the apartment. Fed up with Abel's behavior, Ben throws him out of the apartment.

As the whiteness of the whale does to Ishmael, it suggests an emptiness in the universe, a total void of meaning. It is an emblem complementary to Angela's philosophizing over the Cochiti dancers. The albino confronts Abel with his own lack of meaning, his own lack of a sense of place.

Community Reviews

[Tosamah] tries to span two religions and cultures; neither Christian nor pagan, he remains isolated from himself and his tribal past. A sacred vision emerges in the novel when Abel discovers himself and when … he returns home through his grandfather and his racial memory. His quest takes him through the typical monomythic pattern of descent and death, through "loneliness and fear" … until he is able to return to the reservation and join the ancient religious ritual, the run against evil and death…. [He] will be able to accept his place in the universe and defeat the fear that has dominated his life. Benally, then, like Tosamah, is a priest whose saving message, because he has divorced his religion from his everyday life, has an ironic as well as a revelatory dimension.

The Priest of the Sun

More than six years after the incident outside the bar, Abel is released from prison as part of a program to relocate Indigenous American people. In Los Angeles, he meets a group of Indigenous American men led by a priest named Reverend John Big Bluff Tosamah. Reverend Tosamah refers to himself as Priest of the Sun and tells stories about the Kiowa people. He mocks Abel for his inability to integrate into the modern world, calling him a longhair. Abel meets Ben Benally when both work at the same factory in Los Angeles. When Abel meets a white social worker named Milly, they develop a romantic relationship, but Abel continues to struggle with alcohol addiction.

The January 28 chapter is composed almost entirely of Tosamah's second sermon. This is a passage previously published in an essay in Ramparts magazine and later in The Way To Rainy Mountain, in which Momaday meditates on his Kiowa grandmother's life and the history and passing of the magnificent Kiowa culture. On August 1, in a strange, almost ritualistic encounter, Abel stabs the albino to death in a cornfield. This section of the story ends the next day, with Francisco again alone, hoeing in his fields.

Memory, too, presents the novel; events from Francisco's past, or from Abel's, Ben's, or Tosamah's, are juxtaposed with events of the present moment, giving the reader a dimensional montage of thought and attitude. As the seventh dawn comes these words grow into coherent fragments in Francisco's memory and serve as a final statement of the realizations about the relation of place, words, and community Abel has had earlier in the novel. Benally's childhood memories of life with his grandfather near Wide Ruins reveal a sense of place very like that Abel groped for on his return to Walatowa.
